Ever been personally thanked by a manatee? Your odds could be pretty good if you turn out for International Coastal Clean Up Day. The Ocean Conservatory began the global do-good get- together in 1986, and the group proudly boasts that 100 million pounds of junk and debris have been removed from oceans and waterways worldwide.
This year the Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach (ECOMB), along with the Ocean Conservatory’s Adopt-a-Park program, will target Flagler Monument Island and leave the beach haven happier and healthier.
Participants meet at Island View Park (on Purdy Avenue) at 8:30 a.m. for registration. The cleanup takes place from 9:00 to noon. ECOMB provides water, snacks, garbage bags, and gloves. Volunteers are expected to wear a hat, sneakers, and sunscreen, and to bring a refillable water bottle. After the event, participants can connect with the life they’re protecting, at the personal appreciation party at the Miami Sequarium (4400 Rickenbacker Cswy., Key Biscayne). From noon to 3:00 p.m., you can admire endangered sea turtles and watch dolphins jump for joy at your gallantry. Call 305- 534 3825, or visit www.ecomb.org to register.
