Raising the Bar
A unique program to promote Recycling at restaurants,
bars, and nightclubs across Miami Beach & Miami
Official launch of “Raising the Bar”: official launch of is a unique project designed to promote recycling at local bars, restaurants and nightclubs across Miami Beach and Miami. The pilot program, launched on Earth Day, April 22nd, 2009, now provides free recycling services, for a period of two months, to select venues in Miami Beach and Miami. In a joint collaboration between the Environmental Coalition of Miami and the Beaches (ECOMB), Waste Management, Inc. and VEEV Açaí Spirit, each participating venue will receive two 96-gallon recycling toters and free recyclable pick-up, twice a week, for a period of two months. A total of 1,000 bottles and cans were recycled during a one-week period from four of our pilot project partners. It was estimated that an additional 15,000 bottles and cans were recycled by the end of June 2009. Developed by committed volunteer, Neha Patel, and ECOMB Executive Director, Luiz Rodrigues, it is hoped that the project will incorporate a large percentage of bars, restaurants and nightclubs across Miami Beach and Miami. Currently, only a small percentage of these venues recycle, despite that recycling is cost-effective, saves money, is mandated by law and is good the planet. As a bold stride towards greenifying our communities, the following bars have committed to and implemented the program as part of the project: Abraxas Lounge, Purdy Lounge, The Catalina, and Waxy O’Connor’s Irish Pub, Twist, Bar 721.
